Studio Karez

Studio Karez is a one-person studio based in Amsterdam, where every piece is designed, thrown, glazed, and packed by hand. Behind it all is me — Karez — born and raised in Amsterdam, with Kurdish roots that subtly shape my perspective and work. Sometimes through language, sometimes through form or feeling.

My journey with ceramics began in 2020, when a short course unexpectedly turned into a lasting passion. After years in IT consulting, choosing a slower, more tactile path felt like returning to myself. Working with clay brings together everything I love: creativity, spontaneity, and the calm satisfaction of shaping something with care.

I mainly work with speckled stoneware and white porcelain. I’m drawn to light tones, subtle textures, and balanced forms. The result is work that feels minimal and calm, often with a playful note — like a blue brushstroke, a hand-drawn mark, or a curious form.

Each piece is made to be lived with: simple, thoughtful, and entirely handmade, with quiet attention to detail. All ceramics are fired to high stoneware temperatures and finished with food-safe glazes, ready for everyday use.

And the name?
Karez means “water in the mountains” in Kurdish. Since much of my inspiration comes from Japanese ceramic art, the kanji for water — which visually echoes the Latin letter “K” — felt like a natural fit for the logo.
