about

the brand

studio karez is a one-person studio based in amsterdam, supported by many helping hands behind the scenes. every piece is designed, thrown, glazed and packed by hand. everything you see is made by karez.

born and raised in amsterdam, with kurdish roots that shape how she sees and creates. karez started working with clay in 2020. what began as a short course quickly turned into something much deeper. after years in IT consulting, choosing a slower and more tactile path felt like coming back to something essential. working with clay brings together creativity, spontaneity and the quiet satisfaction of making something with care.

the work

each piece begins as a simple ball of clay and is shaped on the wheel into something meant to be used and lived with. a cup you reach for every morning. a bowl that becomes part of your routine.

the forms are calm and balanced, often in soft tones with small variations in texture or detail. nothing loud, but never flat. everything is made from stoneware and fired to high temperatures, making it strong, food-safe and suitable for everyday use.

the process

wheel throwing is at the core of the practice. the process asks for full attention. clay responds immediately, which makes it hard to stay in your head. the better the focus, the better the result. that connection between mind and hands shapes both the making and the final piece.

this same approach carries into teaching. creating a space where people can slow down, focus and learn the rhythm of the wheel. not only the technique, but the feeling of it.

the name

the name karez means water in the mountains in kurdish. a quiet, continuous flow that reflects both the process and the work.
